Sage known as Salvia Officinalis- Mediterranean in origin
The medicinal qualities of Sage vary from the common cold to healing properties used in religious ceremonies. Sage has been known to improve memory, acts as an anti-inflammatory, helps lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels, reduces stomach pains and cramps, helps alleviate diarrhea and reduces excessive sweating. The herb can be used in cooking or to make tea as well as an essential oil.
The Ancient Chinese and Arabs said Sage was believed to be the key to a long life. Sage as a common herb is typically used at Thanksgiving. The herb is very pungent and thus the lack of use in everyday cooking. Many people use too much of the herb when cooking and then shy away from it. It is great in all sorts of dishes, including soups and stews, salad dressing, marinades, with pasta and all types of meats from chicken to pork and fish.
Sage tea can be used to treat colds, sore throats, to psychoactive effects in ceremonial and religious celebrations. Sage is an excellent digestive herb. It’s antibacterial and astringent properties are used to treat bad bread, sore gums and sore throats. Sage teas can be used to treat hot flashes and heavy menstral bleeding as well as used to dry up breast milk when weaning. It improves hair texture and color. The tea can be used to treat ADD and has shown to improve memory and concentration.
